Andrea Dorman Phox, is a full time Professional Photographer and Artist living at the beach in Long Branch, New Jersey. She has had a successful portrait business since 2003. Her fine art work from paintings to photographs can be found in numerous private collections and publications.

In 1980 Andrea was accepted into the prestigious Whitney Museum Independent Study Program in New York City.

In 1985 Ms. Dorman Phox performed as a light show Artist forJoshua White’s seminal Rock & Roll experience, “The Joshua Light Show” on Cindy Lauper’s Fun Tour.

In 1985, she was Director of Photography on Ericka Beckman’s “Cinderella”, while she was a visiting artist at Minneapolis College of Art and Design, her alma mader where she received her BFA in 1980. Beckman’s 35 mm feature film, “Cinderella” premiered at the 1986 Whitney Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum.

In 1987 she continued to freelance as a theatrical Lighting Designer in New York City at the Wooster Group, Ohio Theater, University of the Streets, Bread and Puppet, and other New York alternative theaters. She worked with theater Directors Richard Foreman, Robin Epstein, Sara Schulman, Jennifer Miller, Stuart Sherman and Mark Daniels to name a few. She co-directed and designed sets for and performed in “Beyond Bedlam” at the Wooster Group in 1987.

She tested and was accepted in 1990 into IATSE’s local 600 New York Camera Operators Union, as a Motion Picture Camera Assistant able to work on Major Studio Films being shot on location in the East Coast Corridor.

Her specialty skills as a First Assistant and focus puller were with the difficult Steadicam Camera System. She worked with legendary Steadicam Operators Jim and Larry McConkey. She was fortunate to work with many well known Actors, Directors and Camera Operators during her Local 600 career. She worked with Directors including Joel Schumacher, on his Lenny Kravitz video Heaven Help, Peter Medak on “Romeo is Bleeding” starring Gary Oldman, Abel Ferrara on “The Addiction”, “Bad Lieutenant”, and “The Funeral”, starring Christopher Walken, Annabella Sciorra, Harvey Keitel, Chris Penn, Madonna, and Isabella Rossellini, Louie Malle on “Vanya on 42nd Street”, Robert Redford on “Quiz Show” and Bruce Weber on several commercials for Revlon, to name just a few productions.

In 1998 Andrea married her longtime friend and work associate , Film Electrician and Lighting Gaffer, Lance Phox.

In 2003 after working twenty plus years in the Motion Picture Industry, she changed career direction after her daughter, Sara, turned three and started her still photography career as a location Portrait Photographer. She opened Andrea Phox Photography, Llc. She joined PPA in 2005.

In 2014 and 2015 she was included in PPA’s prestigious Loan Collection, currently she has a total of 6 Loan images.

In 2014 Andrea received the Lexjet Award and in 2015 she was awarded a Platinum Medal.

In 2016 she opened a challenging community exhibition which was sixteen months in the making called,” Shine:100 Women of Long Branch”. She successfully executed making unique portrait’s of 100 women in the City she lives in with the intention of bringing the community together. Over four hundred people attended the opening and the party that followed. She raised $17,000 which she donated to a battered women’s shelter and the Long Branch Public Library. The Long Branch Public Library centennial anniversary was the inspiration for Shine: 100 Women of Long Branch..

Her drive to share her knowledge has launched another chapter of her career as a teacher and workshop instructor. Andrea has been assisting Tony Sweet on several of his workshops in and around Cape May, New York City and their annual International workshop exploring Cuba since February 2018.

Andrea received her Craftsman Degree in 2022, after working for 6 years to achieve it. Her program on Panoramas is one of her specialty presentations that is both technically instructive and artistically inspiring. Last October she received her last speaker merits towards her Craftsman sharing this program at VPPA’s Virginia Reel series, It was a great pleasure to visit the amazing photography community in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
