The Art of the Family Portrait… and the importance of coming together, now

It might seem obvious that generational portraits are significant to a family’s history, but it’s a fact. The record-keeping of a family’s ebb and flow are a serious value to future generations.

In this time of COVID 19 with its political division, social unrest, and anxiety, a family portrait session can be the catalyst to come together.

I have had several family sessions this season and I think it is in part due to social distancing. People desiring family portraits realize the value of recording who they are today.

I acknowledge the difficulty of finding the time to get everyone on board for this time stopping occasion. There are a myriad of excuses to put it off; I have to lose weight, I need a hair cut, I don’t like pictures, I have pimples, it’s too much trouble, the weather is not perfect and the list goes on.

What can I suggest? First, find a master photographer you trust who consistently delivers an image where everyone looks and feels his/her best.

Second, make the date, put down a deposit to commit.

Third, tolerate the complexities of getting ready: choosing clothes, fixing hair, and arranging schedules.

Fourth, remain flexible, listen to your photographer, she will determine the correct weather conditions for your sessions mood.

And finally, when the time comes to be photographed, make it a joyous occasion and have fun being together.

It is your photographer’s responsibility to see the light, choose the frame, place each subject to create an environment where you will feel confident and comfortable. During the session, it is your job to love each other and have fun.

Following these suggestions will insure an image of your family that you and future generations will cherish.
